The New Year! What shall we call it? January 15, 2010

PORN. Yeah I bet that woke you up.

So, today I’m going to talk about the new year. So a common question that remains is what we are calling the year 2010. Let’s review our options:

-Twenty Ten – As humans we like to shorten everything and as the linguistics’ law of minimal effort states, this seems like the quickest and most efficient way to say the year.

- Two Thousand (and) ten – Although Twenty Ten is more efficient to say, humans also like patterns and we have been naming the past ten years in this manner (Two Thousand One, Two Thousand Two, etc) and as such this also seems like a possible name.

-Twenty Hundred Ten – Ok this is stupid. If any one says this, you should immediately be castrated.

-Twenty Oh-Ten – This one doesn’t seem too likely to stick, but I did hear somone say it. I hope this doesn’t stick around because since the 10 has two digits, it makes no sense to add the “oh” ( like in nineteen oh nine)

So there are our options. I am sure there are more, but the first two seem the most likely. I will say that I am a fan of the “two thousand ten”. I just like it better. That’s how I’ve been saying it anyway. What do you think?

As for the decade, we had the 70′s, the 80′s, the 90′s and the huh? the 00′s? I have no idea what the last decade was called (the 0h’s?, the millenials?), but this decade seems easier to name. Here are our options:

-The Tens – Seems to follow with the 80′s, 90′s. Although it doesn’t have the same ring to it.

-The Teens – I read somewhere about this, and I don’t like it since teens should only refer to the years (13-19) but I could see it sticking around.
